A mesh of KDE, Wayland and Nvidia logos on a grey background.I am a few weeks into using Fedora 40(beta) with plasma 6 and nvidia drivers, and here is my opinion so far.

Most things work as expected, and plasma 6 is a very nice experience, in fact coming from cinnamon desktop, I am quite happy with plasma 6, and really do not want to switch back to cinnamon.   Things just feel sharper and snappier in plasma, and over the past 2 weeks I have really gotten used to using it.

It is possible that the snappy feeling is a product of wayland, but I am not to sure about.

My experiences with wayland on nvidia have been mostly positive, with just a few quirks here and there that I can either ignore, or found workarounds.

One of the biggest issues I ran into is that I use a Windows 11 computer for my work related tasks.  So instead of having 2 computers setup on my desk, I have a headless Windows 11 computer in my data closet, and I use remote desktop to connect to it over 1G Ethernet, it's fast enough and has been my way of working in Windows for a couple of years now.   When I switched to wayland xfreerdp just became a big pile of crap, flickering screen, screen going black, and just weird behavior.    This was almost a deal killer for me, and I toyed with switching back to X11.  But Someone pointed out that they have been using Remmina to make RDP connections and it has been working well for them.  So I gave it a try.  Oh, also I tried wlfreerdp, and it just was worse for me.

Remmina does in deed work well, but the display quality and lag are worse than xfreerdp,  the text is a little blurry and keyboard lag seems to be an issue, but for the most part it is usable, and I am sticking with it.   If you are looking for a decent rdp manager, Remmina is worth looking into.   I also need to note I am running 4K displays, so scaling may be the issue.  I have read that fractional scaling and rdp clients don't get along.  I have not tested this.

Discord was the other app that became unusable.   Well, mostly.  It suffered from all the same issues that xrdp did.. flickering screen, screen blanking, etc..  So there was actually a simple solution for this, instead of using the app, I now use the discord web page.  It has all the same features I used in the client, except now it is in a web page.   This is a nice solution for me, since I hated having to manually update the stupid discord app every time it had an update.   The web page just works.

Gaming has been okay so far.  I get some flickering in some games when they play their cut scene videos, but for the most part the actual game play has been equal to or better than when I ran X11.   I mostly play WoW, and i feel it actually looks sharper and I am getting higher frame rates than I was before.   Another game I like to play is Left4Dead2, and the cut scene videos do get jitter, the game play its self has been flawless.   I recently started playing Fallout: New Vegas and it seems okay so far.

OBS Studio was an issue at first, but it's because of how you have to share screens in Wayland, and once I figured it out it all just started working.  I did have to re-make make scenes to use Video Capture (pipewire), and once I did that, it all started working again.

Overall,  I feel things are a little buggy but will just get better over time, so I am sticking with Wayland for now, hopefully NVidia will get their shit together and it will all just fix it's self over time.

I am a strong believer in moving forward with new technology and software and let the bugs get worked out over time, where if you just abandon it and try again later, your bugs may never get addressed because you were not here to report them.
